Sinus Rinse to Let You Breathe Again
Sinus rinse as treatment for sinus problems Whether you’ve had one sinus infection or many in your lifetime, you probably already know well the discomfort and pain they can cause. I had my first sinus infection as a teen followed by one bout of sinusitis after another throughout most of my adult life. And then I discovered one of the best ways to treat these sinus problems, but it wasn’t a treatment at all. It was prevention. But before I tell you more about that, I want to talk a little bit about some of the treatment options I used and that other people use to provide some relief.
Being Medicated
I can’t even count how many times I went to my doctor during the first years of my battle with sinus infections.
He’d tell me what I already knew. I’d get an outrageously high bill for the services and a prescription for an outrageously high priced medication that only provided temporary relief from what I was going through.
In some cases, he would write me a prescription for
sinus infection antibiotics.
And that was useless. Antibiotics will not help with the majority of sinus infections. It’s not that antibiotics are ineffective; it’s that they are only effective when bacteria are involved. A virus, usually a cold or flu virus almost always causes sinus infections. With chronic sinus problems like mine, there’s a good chance the problem is more closely related to a deviated septum or polyps or mold exposure. Antibiotics aren’t going to do anything to help with that and physicians know this. They only give out antibiotics as a placebo to appease patients who aren’t happy unless they have some pills to pop. Most of the OTC medications to treat sinus problems don’t help the real issue: the sinus congestion and pressure, which is making you miserable. Some may work as a decongestant to make drainage a little easier but if you don’t have something to break down that mucus this won’t be effective. You might be able to take medications that stop coughing or sneezing but that’s the worst thing you can do. Without coughing and sneezing, you’re not going to be able to get rid of that mucus. Also, using medicated nasal sprays can become an addiction and when you stop using them you can end up with rebound congestion. It’s a vicious circle.
Other Treatment OptionsOnce I gave up on the medication route as a way of treating my sinus problems, I started looking for other choices. There was one that gave me more relief than the others: a sinus wash. Sounds unpleasant, doesn’t it? It doesn’t always feel too great either but it does offer some relief. What you do is basically spray saline (a combination of salt and water) into your nose. You can find kits that include everything you need to do this. The saline wash helps in a few ways. When mucus dries inside your nasal passage, it can cause a blockage that further hampers the draining of your sinuses. The saline can clear that way. The saline also provides some soothing by shrinking the tissue in your nose and nasal pathways, which help make drainage easier, and the mixture is good for breaking apart the congestion so it can actually begin to drain. With a sinus rinse, you don’t have to worry about side effects, such as drowsiness. I could never take OTC drugs for my sinus infections because the ones that gave me any type of relief made me so tired that I couldn’t keep my eyes open! That meant I couldn’t work or even drive my car. The sinus rinse also doesn’t include any chemicals other than salt so you don’t have to worry about putting foreign chemicals inside your body.
The Bottom Line about Sinus RinseWhile sinus rinses and kits provided some relief, I realized not having sinus infections at all would have been the best solution. And, thankfully, that’s what I’ve now found. I no longer have sinus headaches, parts of my face are no longer sore and sensitive, my ears are no longer congested, and I can breathe freely almost all of the time. It’s a relief I can’t clearly explain in words.
If you’ve suffered from sinus infections, too, then you can imagine how much relief you could experience, too, just by finding a way to prevent those infections from occurring in the first place.
